The ancient Manor of Wakefield is one of the largest individual manors in England covering several hundred square miles. ( Please refer to the plan by clicking here….. ). Together with the Manor of Conisbrough, it was granted by William the Conqueror to his son in law William de Warenne 1st Earl of Surrey in 1086. Whilst records are held that list all the Lords of the Manor since that time, we have produced a timeline below starting in the year 1700 which was the year that the Manor of Wakefield was purchased by Thomas Osborne, 1st Duke of Leeds. By the year 1700, Conisbrough Manor had been separated from Wakefield as Queen Elizabeth I had granted it to her cousin, Henry Carey in 1561.
In 1700 the Manor of Wakefield was purchased from Sir Christopher Clapham and has since succeeded as follows:-
Thomas Osborne 1st Duke of Leeds 1632 - 1712 > to his eldest surviving son
Peregrine Osborne 2nd Duke of Leeds 1659 - 1729 > to his son
Peregrine Osborne 3rd Duke of Leeds 1691 - 1731 > to his only son
Thomas Osborne 4th Duke of Leeds 1713 - 1789 > to his only son In 1735 the 4th Duke purchased the Manor of Barnsley from the Duke of Portland and in 1737 he purchased the Manor of Conisbrough thus reuniting the manors of Wakefield & Conisbrough.
In 1773 Amelia Darcy, daughter of Robert Darcy 4th Earl of Holderness married Francis Osborne the then Marquess of Carmarthen, son of the 4th Duke of Leeds and in doing so she introduced one of the two Manors of Wales in to the Leeds family. In 1775, the 4th Duke purchased the other Manor of Wales thus combining both of the Wales Manors. Thus all four of the manors were now in the same family and passed on as follows:-
Francis Osborne 5th Duke of Leeds 1751 - 1799 > to his eldest son
George Osborne 6th Duke of Leeds 1775 - 1838 > bequeathed all his un-entailed property to his son in law
Sackville Walter Lane-Fox 1797 - 1874 > to his first son
Sackville George Lane-Fox 1827 - 1888 > to his eldest daughter
Marcia Amelia Lane-Fox 1863 - 1926 > to her husband
Charles Anderson-Pelham 4th Earl of Yarborough 1859 - 1936 > to his eldest surviving son
Sackville George Pelham 5th Earl of Yarborough 1888 - 1948 > to his eldest daughter
Lady Diana Miller Baroness Fauconberg & Conyers 1920 - 2013 > to the current Lord of the Manors who has subsequently transferred the Manors and all the associated Manorial Rights to Hardrof Ltd.
